Google, Apple, other vaguely familiar tech names top Nielsen's 'Tops of 2011' list

Those perpetual rankers over at Nielsen unveiled their "Tops of 2011" list this week, revealing the most popular brands and products across all manner of categories. There's nothing particularly shocking over on the digital side of things -- Google topped the list of Top US Web Brands, followed by Facebook. Perhaps a bit more surprisingly, Yahoo managed to hold its own in 2011, rounding out the top three. Over on the smartphone side, Apple came out on top with a 29 percent marketshare in data pulled from August to October 2011, followed by HTC. Despite a fairly tough year, RIM managed the number three spot. On the social side, Facebook scored number one, followed by Blogger and Twitter, while some site called "YouTube" was ranked number one in video. Check out the rest of the results in the source link below.

Ground broken for new church in Spalding County after tornado

VAUGHN, Ga. -- Residents in the small town of Vaughn are beginning construction of a new church to replace the one that was destroyed by a powerful tornado in April.

Fox 5 Atlanta reports (http://bit.ly/t0tHfk) that members of Vaughn United Methodist Church broke ground on their new building Thursday in the Spalding County town.

Much of the town is still littered with debris from April's storm. Pastor Sandra Findley said the church building hit by the twister was more than 100 years old.

Before the storm, Vaughn had no more than 100 residents. Fox 5 reports that many of those people moved on after the tornado.

With the building of the new church, residents say they hope the town can also be rebuilt.

Vaughn is about 40 miles south of Atlanta.

The Edge of Space - Astronomers Discover Rare Galaxy at Dawn of Time

Astronomers, including the University of California, Riverside's Bahram Mobasher and his graduate student Hooshang Nayyeri, have discovered that one of the most distant galaxies known is churning out stars at a shockingly high rate. The researchers made the discovery using NASA's Spitzer and Hubble space telescopes. The blob-shaped galaxy, called GN-108036, is the brightest galaxy found to date at such great distances.

The galaxy, which was discovered and confirmed using ground-based telescopes, is 12.9 billion light-years away. Data from Spitzer and Hubble were used to measure the galaxy's high star production rate, equivalent to about 100 suns per year. For reference, our Milky Way galaxy is about five times larger and 100 times more massive than GN-108036, but makes roughly 30 times fewer stars per year.

The discovery is surprising because previous surveys had not found galaxies this bright so early in the history of the universe. According to the researches, GN-108036 may be a special, rare object that they happened to catch during an extreme burst of star formation. The international team of astronomers, led by Masami Ouchi of the University of Tokyo, Japan, first identified the remote galaxy after scanning a large patch of sky with the Subaru Telescope atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Its great distance was then carefully confirmed with the W.M. Keck Observatory, also on Mauna Kea.

GN-108036 lies near the very beginning of time itself, a mere 750 million years after our universe was created 13.7 billion years ago in an explosive "Big Bang." Its light has taken 12.9 billion years to reach us, so we are seeing it as it existed in the very distant past. Astronomers refer to the object's distance by a number called its "redshift," which relates to how much its light has stretched to longer, redder wavelengths due to the expansion of the universe. Objects with larger redshifts are farther away and are seen further back in time. GN-108036 has a redshift of 7.2. Only a handful of galaxies have confirmed redshifts greater than 7, and only two of these have been reported to be more distant than GN-108036.

Infrared observations from Spitzer and Hubble were crucial for measuring the galaxy's star-formation activity. Astronomers were surprised to see such a large burst of star formation because the galaxy is so small and from such an early cosmic era. Back when galaxies were first forming, in the first few hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang, they were much smaller than they are today, having yet to bulk up in mass.

During this epoch, as the universe expanded and cooled after its explosive start, hydrogen atoms permeating the cosmos formed a thick fog that was opaque to ultraviolet light. This period, before the first stars and galaxies had formed and illuminated the universe, is referred to as the "dark ages." The era came to an end when light from the earliest galaxies burned through, or "ionized," the opaque gas, causing it to become transparent. Galaxies similar to GN-108036 may have played an important role in this event. "The high rate of star formation found for GN-108036 implies that it was rapidly building up its mass some 750 million years after the Big Bang, when the universe was only about five percent of its present age," said Mobasher, a professor of physics and astronomy. "This was therefore a likely ancestor of massive and evolved galaxies seen today."

Bolivian President Hopes To Build Railway To Peru

LIMA, Peru -- Bolivia's president said Monday that he hopes to build a new railway linking his country to Peru that would facilitate exports to Asia.

Bolivian President Evo Morales said he has discussed the plan with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala. Morales told the Peruvian radio station RPP that the railway would run from Puerto Suarez, on Bolivia's border with Brazil, to the Pacific port of Ilo in Peru.

"It's my great dream," Morales said, adding that Brazil and Peru would also gain from having a railway link. He said it would carry agricultural products as well as other commodities to Asian countries.

Morales said in August after a visit to China that Chinese officials expressed interest in making the railway project a priority. It's not immediately clear how much the railway would cost, or how much financial support China might provide.

Bolivia and Peru currently export minerals to China including zinc and lead. Bolivia currently uses roads to truck shipments to Pacific ports in Chile.

Morales made the remarks Monday in the Peruvian city of Cusco, where he spent Christmas after meeting with Peru's president.

Humala also reiterated his support last week for Bolivia in its long-standing request that Chile provide the landlocked country with a corridor of land to access the Pacific coast.

Gomez reveals sister's name was Scarlett Teefey

We're happy to report Selena Gomez and her family are doing OK.

The pop star and former Disney princess has broken her silence since tragedy struck when her mom recently suffered a miscarriage.

RELATED: Selena Gomez Cancels Concerts After Mother Suffers Miscarriage

"Belated Merry Christmas everybody," Gomez tweeted and posted on Facebook this afternoon. "I can't thank you enough for all of your thoughts and prayers. I love you all so much and we hope you and your family had a beautiful Christmas!"

She not only signed the message from herself, but also included her mom, her stepdad and "our guardian angel Scarlett."

Gomez announced on Twitter late last month that mom Mandy and stepfather Brian Teefey were expecting their first child together. Sadly, Mandy miscarried mere weeks later.

Gomez subsequently pulled out of two radio station holiday shows to be with her family. She is expected to perform in Times Square during MTV's live New Year's Eve special.

(AP) ? Santa Claus set records Christmas Eve he raced across the globe on his on his traditional holiday mission.

Santa tracking volunteers at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado said they fielded about 102,000 telephone queries beginning early Saturday on his progress, breaking the previous mark of 80,000.

And his NORAD Facebook page recorded about 999,000 "likes," compared with 716,000 a year ago. Twitter followers increased from about 53,000 last year more than 89,000.

Officials said records set this year were likely generated by people passing the word as well as social media interest.

"I think what happens is that every year the ones the participated" tells others, Canadian Navy Lt. Al Blondin. "There's word of mouth."

Volunteers at NORAD Tracks Santa said kids started calling at 4 a.m. Saturday to find out where Santa was.

"The phones are ringing like crazy," Lt. Cmdr. Bill Lewis said Saturday.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command has been telling anxious children about Santa's whereabouts every year since 1955. That was the year a Colorado Springs newspaper ad invited kids to call Santa on a hotline, but the number had a typo, and dozens of kids wound up talking to the Continental Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor.

The officers on duty played along and began sharing reports on Santa's progress. It's now a deep-rooted tradition at NORAD, a joint U.S.-Canada command that monitors the North American skies and seas from a control center at Peterson.

First lady Michelle Obama was among the volunteers for a second year in a row. She took about 10 calls from her family's holiday vacation in Hawaii. Lewis said Obama's voice didn't throw any of the phoning children.

"They all just asked run-of-the-mill stuff. They wanted to know about Santa," Lewis said.

After visiting many nations, Santa's first stop in the U.S. came at 9:02 p.m. MST in Atlanta. Blondin said.

The NORAD website said Santa then set a generally westward course, making numerous stops including Cleveland, Denver and San Francisco. He later passed through Hawaii and Alaska before setting his home course for the North Pole.

In addition to NORAD's Santa website and Facebook and Twitter pages, Santa this year has a new tracking app for smart phones. The app includes the Elf Toss, a game similar to Angry Birds. Blondin said there had been more than 700,000 downloads.

Titleist Vokey SM4 Spin Milled Wedge Help Golf Celebrities Win the Game

Titleist has launched their newestTitleist Vokey SM4 Spin Milled Wedge, which aimed at renewing some of the spin lost following the change of groove regulations. The new Vokey wedge, called the SM4 because it is the 4th generation of Spin Milled wedge, features a new configuration with 17 grooves on the face with each one precisely milled right to the edge of the R&A's legal limit. I have never seen the wedge until I watch the game of Australia Open. So I decide to go to the online golf shop to buy one. After several rounds of hitting, I like it very much.

Titleist Vokey SM4 Spin Milled Wedge is so popular with players on International Tour since it has released by Bob. All Bob Vokey purpose of creating this golf clubs is study, create, and design wedges for players from the amateur 20 handicap to the elite touring pros. Tour players are usually pretty particular about their wedges as they are their scoring clubs and players such as Rory, Rickie, Scott Stallings and Brendan who have won the game by changing into the new SM4's right away. The touring pros play his wedges because they work the best.

The New Titleist Vokey SM4 Spin Milled Wedge has several advantages from models past. Bob spent a lot of time working on the SM4 wedges and through his new design, has been able to increase the spin over the SM3 by about 1000 to 1200rpms. He has also developed a new treatment for the grooves that help keep the grooves last longer and stay sharp. SM4 grooves allow for the Maximum conforming spin through tour proven extreme grooves that are totally inspected, maintain tight tolerance, and have the most aggressive groove edge at the limits allowed by the Rules of Golf.

The Titleist Vokey SM4 Spin Milled Wedge features grooves in order to allow for superior full shot control. Durability is always a key factor when selecting a wedge, and all SM4 Spin Milled wedges receive a localized heat treatment in the impact area that preserves the precise milled grooves and micro edges. Lastly, the SM4 Spin Milled wedges come in more loft, bounce and sole grinds than ever before. Go and get Vokey at online golf shop- you won't be regret to have this wedge in the golf greens.

Missile mystery: Who owns 69 seized Patriots?

China denied on Friday any link to a batch of 69 Patriot missiles confiscated by Finnish authorities, saying the weapons were destined for South Korea.

"As far as we know these goods were made in Germany and were being sent to South Korea,"? Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a daily news briefing. "This is a British ship which left Germany carrying Patriot missiles for South Korea."

Some reports have alleged the missiles were destined for China, but Liu said that was not the case.

"I don't see what connection this boat has with China. We think it odd that some people always link certain things to China. The facts are all very clear," he added.

The surface-to-air missiles were found on Wednesday when authorities searched the cargo ship Thor Liberty in Kotka, southern Finland. They also discovered 150 tons of explosive material called nitroguanidine, which was not stowed properly.

Markku Koskinen, the director of traffic operations at the port of Kotka, said they were deficiently packed in wooden boxes on open pallets and would be moved to metal containers in line with rules on the maritime transport of explosives.

Finnish authorities confiscated the missiles found on the ship and arrested its Ukrainian captain and chief officer on suspicion of trying to transport the missiles via Finland without permission.

"The missiles did not have the appropriate transit papers," Detective Superintendent Timo Virtanen said.

Story: China gives man 9 years in prison for arguing for democracy

Finland requires those seeking to transport defense material via its territory to seek permission. In the past six years there have been 20 cases of defense material being transported without the required documentation with the latest incident appearing to be one of the largest consignments.

A spokesman for Germany's Defense Ministry told The Associated Press on Thursday that the missiles were an official shipment that was fully declared and had all necessary clearings from German authorities. He also said they were being transported to South Korea.

The ship was sailing under an Isle of Man flag and had stopped to load anchor cables on board.

China is subject to an arms embargo by the United States and European Union imposed after the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators around Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

American-made Patriot missiles are used to counter threats, including aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. They are part of the U.S. Army's weaponry and were extensively used during the 1991 Gulf war.

Manufactured by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Florida, Patriot missiles have been in service in several countries, including Egypt, Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and South Korea.

Profiling lawsuit could add to sheriff's troubles

(AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin, File)

(AP) ? The self-described "America's toughest sheriff" has survived firestorms in the past, but none in the past decade have been as bad as what the lawman has been hit with in the past few weeks.

And in a few days, a federal judge could make things worse for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Murray Snow heard arguments over a lawsuit from a handful of Latino residents alleging racial profiling during Arpaio's immigration sweeps. He could send it to trial, throw it out, or declare that Arpaio uses racial profiling in his immigration enforcement.

The accusations echo those in a scathing U.S. Justice Department report last week that resulted in the sheriff's office losing its power to checks inmates' immigration status.

Arpaio on Wednesday questioned the timing of the report's release.

"Why couldn't they wait? Were they trying to poison our (racial profiling) case?" Arpaio said. The sheriff did not attend the hearing Thursday.

The Latinos claim officers based some traffic stops on the race of Hispanics in vehicles, pulling them over without probable cause to inquire about their immigration status. The stops were made during his department's immigration patrols in metropolitan Phoenix.

They are seeking a declaration that the sheriff's office violated their constitutional rights and must establish stronger policies that protect against racial profiling.

Stan Young, a lawyer for those who filed the lawsuit, said Arpaio launched sweeps after he received racially charged letters and emails that complained of people speaking Spanish. Tim Casey, a lawyer for Arpaio's office, said the sheriff's office launches its sweeps on race-neutral grounds and that the sheriff never acted on those letters.

"If I write you a letter and say all sorts of things in that and you receive it, does that mean you are a racist because you received a letter from me?" Casey said outside of court. He called for the case to be dismissed, arguing that those who filed the lawsuit could not prove that they face a threat of future injury from the sweeps.

The hearing was the latest among the mounting legal problems and blistering criticism facing the sheriff in just the past three weeks.

At the beginning of December, he apologized for more than 400 botched sex crimes cases handled by his office. About a week later, the Justice Department released the report alleging a wide range of civil rights violations against his office. A lawsuit filed this week claimed that his staff ignored a Hispanic female inmate's complaints and violated her rights when they kept her shackled before and after her cesarean section in 2009.

And the family of a 44-year-old man was exploring legal action against the sheriff's office after he was found unresponsive following a fight in jail with deputies. He died days later after being taken off life support.

Arpaio has denied the racial profiling allegations in the lawsuit over his immigration patrols. He has said people pulled over in the sweeps were approached because deputies had probable cause to believe they had committed crimes and that it was only afterward that deputies found many of them were illegal immigrants.

The patrols, known as "sweeps," involved deputies flooding an area ? in some cases, heavily Latino areas ? over several days to seek out traffic violators and arrest other offenders. Illegal immigrants accounted for 57 percent of the 1,500 people arrested in the 20 sweeps conducted by his office since January 2008, according to figures provided by Arpaio's office.

The Justice Department's report said Arpaio's office had a pattern of racially profiling Latinos; basing immigration enforcement on racially charged complaints; and punishing Hispanic jail inmates for speaking Spanish. The sheriff faces a Jan. 4 deadline for saying whether he wants to work out an agreement to settle allegations, and the Justice Department has said it's prepared to sue Arpaio if no agreement can be worked out.

Apart from the civil rights probe, a federal grand jury has been investigating Arpaio's office on criminal abuse-of-power allegations since at least December 2009. It is specifically examining the investigative work of the sheriff's anti-public corruption squad.

Warren Hellman Dead: Beloved San Francisco Financier And Philanthropist Dies At 77

Warren Hellman, San Francisco's beloved, banjo-picking billionaire, died Sunday night after a long battle with leukemia. He was 77.

A local legend, Hellman was best known as the founder and force behind the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival, the weekend of free music -- completely funded by the financier -- that takes over Golden Gate Park each autumn and draws big-name acts ranging from Emmylou Harris to Broken Social Scene.

But Hellman's legacy extends far deeper into the fabric of the city than the three days of joy he sponsored each September in the park. He spent his life giving to the causes he cared most deeply about.

Since building his fortune in finance, first as the youngest partner in the now-defunct Lehman Brothers investment bank's history (at age 28) and later as co-founder of the private equity firm Hellman & Friedman, Hellman donated almost everything he had to his passion projects and political causes throughout San Francisco. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the investor often joked that he had little interest in collecting expensive cars or art.

"What does move me is the philanthropic stuff," he told Forbes magazine in 2006. "Giving really does move me."

In addition to creating and maintaining one of the city's most cherished festivals, Hellman funded the San Francisco Free Clinic, built an underground parking garage in Golden Gate Park to help keep the DeYoung Museum intact after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, spearheaded a major pension reform effort during the November elections and co-founded online local news website The Bay Citizen.

"Warren was San Francisco, and his passion for the city ran deep," longtime friend Phil Bronstein, the former Chronicle editor, told The Bay Citizen. "His philanthropy and quiet leadership were unparalleled.?

And San Francisco recently had a chance to show its gratitude. Last Thursday, the city's Recreation and Parks Commission unanimously voted to rename Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadow, the nucleus of Hardly Strictly, to "Hellman Hollow." ?I can?t think of another citizen of San Francisco that has done more for the city or had the City as his highest priority on almost everything he has ever done,? Mark Buell, chairman of the commission, told the San Francisco Examiner.

A budding banjo player himself, Hellman performed at nearly every iteration of Hardly Strictly with his band, The Wronglers, writing songs about the various causes and issues that made him tick. Unconventional to the core, the lifelong Republican supported labor unions, was known for his rugged, frayed wardrobe and attended Burning Man the year he turned 70.

He even postponed chemotherapy treatments in order to appear onstage with The Wronglers during this year's Hardly Strictly festival. Good-spirited until the very end, Hellman would more recently joke that he had changed his name to Luke Emia, according to The Bay Citizen.

And festival fans need not fret: Hardly Strictly will continue in Hellman's wake for many years to come. The financier created an endowment fund for the explicit purpose of funding the event "after I croak." "Yes, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival will go on!" his daughter, Patricia Hellman Gibbs, confirmed to the Chronicle on Sunday.

Public services will be held in Hellman's honor on Wednesday at San Francisco's Congregation Emanu-El. According to his family, a community celebration of his life will take place in the following weeks. The family has requested that instead of sending flowers, mourners pay their respects by making donations to the San Francisco Free Clinic, The Bay Citizen, and the San Francisco School Alliance.

Take a look at a video of Hellman playing with The Wronglers during 2009's Hardly Strictly festival below, and click over to The Bay Citizen for more comprehensive coverage and celebration of his life.

Comet Lovejoy Survives Fiery Plunge Through Sun, NASA Says (SPACE.com)

This story was updated at 8:50 p.m. EST.

A newfound comet defied long odds today (Dec. 15), surviving a suicidal dive through the sun's hellishly hot atmosphere, according to NASA scientists.

Comet Lovejoy plunged through the sun's corona at about 7 p.m. EST today (midnight GMT on Dec. 16), coming within 87,000 miles (140,000 kilometers) of our star's surface. Temperatures in the corona can reach 2 million degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 million degrees Celsius), so most researchers expected the icy wanderer to be completely destroyed.

But Lovejoy proved to be made of tough stuff. A video taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft showed the icy object emerging from behind the sun and zipping back off into space.

"Breaking News! Lovejoy lives! The comet Lovejoy has survived its journey around the sun to reemerge on the other side," SDO researchers tweeted today.

SDO is one of many instruments that scientists ? eager to record and study the comet's presumed demise ? trained on Lovejoy as it streaked toward the sun.

"We have here an exceptionally rare opportunity to observe the complete vaporization of a relatively large comet, and we have approximately 18 instruments on five different satellites that are trying to do just that," Karl Battams, a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., wrote on the Sungrazing Comets website today, before Lovejoy's closest solar approach.

Battams runs the website, which is devoted to comets discovered by two different spacecraft: NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), which is operated jointly by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). [Death of a Comet: Photos of Sungrazing Comet Lovejoy]

Preparing for the end

Lovejoy has a core about 660 feet (200 meters) wide. It belongs to a class of comets known as Kreutz sungrazers, whose orbits bring them very close to the sun.

All Kreutz sungrazers are thought to be the remnants of a single giant comet that broke apart several centuries ago. They're named after the 19th-century German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who first showed that such comets are related.

Comets plunge into the sun on a regular basis, but they rarely give much advance notice of their suicidal intentions. That's why scientists were so excited about Lovejoy. Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy discovered the icy wanderer on Nov. 27, giving researchers plenty of time to map out their observation campaign.

And that campaign has been intense, involving five different spacecraft. In addition to SDO, SOHO and STEREO, scientists planned to use Japan's Hinode satellite and ESA's Proba spacecraft to track Lovejoy's movements, Battams wrote.

NASA also created a website providing updates about the comet's pass through the corona, as well as images of the event beamed down by SDO. It can be found here: http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/lovejoy.php

For his part, Terry Lovejoy said he was happy to have made a contribution, and he marveled a bit at all the attention the comet has been getting.

"It's been tremendous," Lovejoy told SPACE.com. "Apparently it's all over Facebook, and I don't use Facebook. But there's a lot of interest. I think a lot of people like the name ? the Lovejoy name seems to strike a chord with people."

A dramatic escape

Lovejoy is quite large for a sungrazing comet, and experts expected it to die an impressive death. The website Spaceweather.com, for example, predicted Lovejoy would blaze as brightly as Jupiter or Venus in the sky as it neared the sun.

Battams also expected a good show, saying the comet might even be visible from the ground around sunset today in the Northern Hemisphere.?

"I do think that it will put on a spectacular show for us and will be the brightest Kreutz-group comet that SOHO has ever observed," Battams wrote last week.

Though the early returns are just starting to come in, those forecasts appear to be on the money. Observations from various spacecraft do indeed show Lovejoy flaring up significantly as it neared our star.

Researchers will keep analyzing the images to better understand the comet's daring solar approach. And now skywatchers apparently have another shot to catch a glimpse of the resilient Lovejoy on Friday morning (Dec. 16).

For observers in North America, the comet will rise approximately 5 to 10 minutes before dawn and will be situated to the?upper right of the sun. If Lovejoy is still shining at least as brightly as Venus, it may be visible, experts say.?

You could also try to spot Lovejoy after the sun comes up, if you're exceedingly careful. Block the rising sun behind a distant building and focus on the part of the sky 3 to 4 degrees above and to the right of the sun (your clenched fist held at arm's length is equal to roughly 10 degrees). CAUTION: Never point binoculars or a telescope at or near the sun, and never look directly at our star with the naked eye. Serious eye damage can result.

And don't get your hopes up, either. The comet may well be too faint to see, experts say.

Note: If you take any good pictures of Comet Lovejoy and would like them to be considered for a future story or image gallery, contact SPACE.com managing editor Tariq Malik at tmalik@space.com.

FCC tells advertisers to CALM down, lowers the volume on commercial breaks

Pretty soon, you won't have to scramble to lower the volume during noisy commercial breaks -- that's if you even watch live TV. After making its way through Capitol Hill, the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act (or CALM) -- which aims to keep the sounds coming out of your flat panel even-keeled -- has just been adopted in a ruling by the FCC. Starting next December, ads and promos will have to remain in-step with the audio levels of scheduled programming. While the affected parties have a full year to get their acts together, the main burden of enforcement lies with broadcasters and MVPDs like Comcast and Verizon FiOS. So, come next holiday season, you'll be able to tune in and tune out without being blown away.

FCC tells advertisers to CALM down, lowers the volume on commercial breaks originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 14:31:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Two governors petition for medical marijuana (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? The governors of Washington state and Rhode Island filed a petition with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration on Wednesday that would allow doctors to legally prescribe marijuana as a medical treatment.

Democrat Christine Gregoire of Washington and independent Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island are asking the DEA to reclassify marijuana as a schedule 2 drug from schedule 1 - where it is listed alongside heroin and ecstasy - which would make it legal for doctors to recommend its use and pharmacists to supply it.

"Poll after poll shows an overwhelming majority of Americans now see medical marijuana as legitimate," said Gregoire of Washington, where pot-dispensing clinics have become popular in the 13 years since the state allowed them.

"Sixty percent of voters in our state said yes on a 1998 ballot measure. An ever-growing number of doctors now tell thousands of suffering patients they may find relief from the unique medicinal qualities of cannabis," she said in a statement.

Washington and Rhode Island are two of 16 U.S. states that allow the sale of medical marijuana in some fashion, even though the drug is still illegal under federal law.

The governors' petition will require the Federal Drug Administration to conduct a new scientific review and analysis of recent advances in cannabis research since the last time the FDA reviewed the matter in 2006.

The DEA said in a statement it received the petition and would review it. The agency also noted the Department of Health and Human Services previously reviewed a similar petition and rejected it.

After evaluating that previous request on scientific and medical grounds, HHS "determined that marijuana has a high potential for abuse, has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the U.S. and lacks accepted safety protocols for use under medical supervision," the DEA said in the statement.

The petition came weeks after authorities raided state-sanctioned medical marijuana dispensaries across western Washington state, targeting storefronts deemed to be engaged in illegal drug trafficking and money laundering.

Federal prosecutors have said a recent crackdown on such dispensaries was not meant to target patients who have a legitimate medical need for pot but were focused on those engaged in drug trafficking.
