Chemists of the University Jena reveal how algae delete unwanted 'competitors'

(Jena) Every morning when the sun comes up, the ocean ground is radically cleaned. As soon as the first rays of sunlight find their way into the water, the microalgae "Nitzschia cf pellucida" start their deadly 'morning hygiene'. The algae, the size of only some few micrometers, wrap themselves and their surroundings in a highly toxic poison: cyanogen bromide, a chemical relative of hydrocyanic acid, although much more toxic.

Like a 'molecular toothbrush', which removes other micro-organisms thoroughly, every morning this chemical mace 'disinfects' the ground on which these diatoms grow. "Thus they can ideally grow and keep direct competitors for light and free space in check," Professor Dr. Georg Pohnert of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany) states. The director of the Institute of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry revealed together with his team and colleagues of the University Ghent (Belgium) the chemical devastating blow of the diatoms. Their findings were published in the new edition of the well known science magazine Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cyanogen bromide is a highly poisonous metabolic toxin and is amongst other things being used for the lixiviating of gold ores. During the First World War it was also used as a chemical weapon. "Until now it wasn't even known that this poison occurs in the living nature at all," says Professor Pohnert. For "Nitzschia cf pellucida" the production of cyanogen bromide seems to be easy though. As soon as the first rays of sunlight find their way into the water, the cellular 'devil's workshop' starts to work. "From two up to four hours after day break the concentration of the released cyanogen bromide is at its highest, later on it decreases," Professor Pohnert explains one of the results of his new study.

The scientists can still only speculate about the fact that the poison doesn't harm the diatoms themselves. One thing is for sure: While the 'competing' algae give up after two hours at most, subsequent to being attacked by cyanogen bromide the poison at the same time doesn't harm Nitzschia cf pellucida. To find the reasons for this is one of the next research objectives of the Jena scientists and their Belgian partners.

But according to chemist Pohnert this would be pure basic research. Cyanogen bromide is completely inapplicable to practical use for instance as a means against unwanted algae growth. Because it is certain that in this case it is not only the algae that would be damaged.

Uproar over rightist leader's comments about Jews (AP)

VIENNA ? Far-right Austrian politicians were widely criticized Monday for comparing protests against a fancy ball that attracts extremists to the Nazis' persecution of Jews.

Vienna's Jewish community demanded an investigation into the remarks but the Freedom Pary insisted no harm was meant.

The comments by Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache and an associate were first reported Sunday on the website of the daily Der Standard, but they drew little attention until Monday.

The furor extended the controversy over Friday's far-right ball, which attracts guests who include the neo-Nazi fringe and was held this year on the same day the world pays tribute to victims of the Holocaust.

Police recorded only isolated violent incidents Friday from demonstrators outside the Viennese palace where the ball was being held. But Strache was quoted as saying the violence was "like Kristallnacht," referring to the 1938 anti-Semitic riots across Germany and parts of Austria that left streets strewn with broken glass from the windows of Jewish-owned property and synagogues. Kristallnacht was an ominous sign of the Holocaust to follow.

"We are the new Jews," Strache declared to other ball guests, according to Austrian media.

Strache associate Klaus Nittmann, meanwhile, was quoted as saying "whoever works for this ball immediately gets a Jew star pinned on him" ? a reference to the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear under Nazi rule.

Austria's Jewish community demanded that the state prosecutor investigate the comments and urged Strache to give up his parliamentary immunity from legal action.

Karl Oelligner of the opposition Green Party suggested that such comments can only come from someone who "has either lost his marbles or is trying to trivialize the horrors of Nazi rule."

Hannes Rauch, whose centrist People's Party is in the government coalition, called Strache's words "an open slap in the face for all those who were victims of the criminal National Socialist regime."

Freedom Party officials dismissed the criticism. Spokesman Harald Vilimsky spoke of "artificial and ridiculous outrage," adding that Strache only meant the denunciations of ball supporters and attacks on their property are reminiscent of "the horrible reports about the sinister era of National Socialism."

Strache, he said, did not intend to play down "the agony that was forced upon the Jews."

Austria has moved from its postwar portrayal of being Nazi Germany's first victim to acknowledging that it was Hitler's willing partner. Most young Austrians reject Nazi ideology and condemn the part their parents might have played in the Holocaust.

At the same time, the rightist-populist Freedom Party ? whose supporters range from those disillusioned with more traditional parties to Islamophobes and Holocaust deniers ? has become Austria's second-strongest political force.

Although the annual ball regularly comes under criticism, its overlap this year with worldwide commemorations of the Holocaust had increased the pressure on organizers and attendees.

Because it was listed among other champagne-laced Viennese balls, an Austrian committee reporting to UNESCO, the U.N.'s culture organization, struck all the balls from its list of Austria's noteworthy traditions earlier this month.

(AP) ? Novak Djokovic wore down Rafael Nadal in the longest Grand Slam singles final in the history of professional tennis, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 after 5 hours, 53 minutes to claim his third Australian Open title.

Djokovic wrapped it up at 1:37 a.m. local time on Monday, becoming the fifth man since the Open Era began in 1968 to win three straight Grand Slam finals.

The 24-year-old Djokovic tore off his shirt in celebration after the riveting final. He went to his support camp and repeatedly thumped the side of the arena in front of them in delight and relief.

Nadal leaned on the net, while Djokovic sat on his haunches before the trophy presentation. Eventually, an official brought them chairs and a bottle of water each.

"We made history tonight and unfortunately there couldn't be two winners," Djokovic said.

Djokovic maintained his mastery of Nadal, who has lost seven straight finals against the Serb since March last year. The Spainiard became the first man in the Open Era to lose three straight major finals. He lost in four sets to Djokovic at last year's Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

Having reduced Roger Federer to tears when he won the title over five sets in 2009, Nadal maintained his composure during the on-court speeches ? and even managed a joke.

"Good morning, everybody," Nadal said, earning laughs and loud applause from the crowd. "Congratulations to Novak and his team. They deserve it. They are doing something fantastic, so congratulations."

After coming back from 5-3 down to win the fourth-set tiebreaker, Nadal was up a break at 4-2 in the fifth set against Djokovic, who seemed to be tiring.

But the No. 1-ranked Djokovic, who needed almost five hours to win his semifinal against Andy Murray, somehow responded. He broke for a 6-5 lead and saved a break point before finally claiming the win.

The previous longest major singles final was Mats Wilander's win over Ivan Lendl at the U.S. Open in 1988, which lasted 4 hours, 54 minutes.

The longest Australian Open final also involved Wilander in 1988, when the Swede beat Pat Cash. Sunday's match was also the longest in the tournament's history.

A tense, error-strewn opening set offered no indication of the high drama to follow. In hot, humid conditions, both players struggled for consistency.

After an exchange of breaks, Nadal took it after 80 minutes ? two minutes short of the entire women's final the previous day.

Nadal had only lost one match of his previous 134 in Grand Slams after winning the first set, but he found his serve coming under increasing pressure as the match wore on.

As if to demonstrate the pervading tension of the occasion, Djokovic double-faulted at break point down while serving for the second set at 5-3 before Nadal returned the favor by double-faulting in the next game to give the Serb the second set.

By the time Djokovic took a 3-1 lead in the third set, Nadal's shoulders were visibly slumping and he was talking to himself more often, unable to stop his opponent from peppering the baseline with his returns to take control of the points.

At 5-2, his uncle and coach Toni Nadal moved to the front row of the players' box to try to get some positive messages to his nephew.

It didn't work. Nadal lost his serve again ? at love.

But in the fourth set, Nadal dug in, drawing on his renowned fighting spirit, and the match really came alive when he recovered from 0-40 down in the eighth game with two spectacular winners, two unreturnable serves and an ace.

Then came a rain shower and a brief delay for the roof to close, robbing Nadal of his momentum.

He regained it the tiebreaker, though, reeling off four straight points from 5-3 down, taking the match into a decider when Djokovic's forehand dropped wide.

The tennis, almost unbelievably, seemed to improve in the fifth set as the match ticked past five hours.

At 4-4, Djokovic looped a backhand long after a 31-shot rally ? the longest of the match ? and then collapsed with his arms and legs spread wide.

He struggled to pick himself and his racket up, but he broke two games later when Nadal, finally showing signs of fatigue, netted a backhand.

Still, Nadal wasn't quite done. Djokovic had to save a break point with a cross-court backhand, crossing himself as he limped back to the baseline, before finally claiming victory with his 57th winner of the match.

Huge asteroid may be packed with water ice

The surface of Vesta ? the second-largest object in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter ? appears to be quite dry. But water ice may lurk underground over roughly half of the huge space rock's area, particularly near the poles, researchers said.

The giant asteroid Vesta may contain a vast supply of water ice, a supply that has sat frozen for billions of years, a new study reveals.

The?surface of Vesta?? the second-largest object in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter ? appears to be quite dry. But water ice may lurk underground over roughly half of the huge space rock's area, particularly near the poles, researchers said. And it may have been there for billions of years.

"Near the north and south poles, the conditions appear to be favorable for?water ice?to exist beneath the surface," study co-author Timothy Stubbs,? of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement.

Asteroid ice underground?

Vesta has an average diameter of about 330 miles (530 kilometers). It probably doesn't have any permanently shadowed craters where water ice could stay frozen at the surface, researchers said. [NASA Photos of Asteroid Vesta]

That's because the asteroid is tilted on its axis at about 27 degrees,?giving Vesta seasons?akin to the ones we experience on Earth. So every part of the space rock's surface likely sees the sun at some point during a Vestan year.

However, the research team ? using models based on data gathered by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and other instruments ? determined that average annual temperatures near Vesta's poles are probably less than minus 200 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 129 degrees Celsius). Below this threshhold, water ice is thought to be able to survive in the top 10 feet (3 meters) or so of Vestan soil, or regolith.

The average temperatures near Vesta's equator, however, are roughly minus 190 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 123 Celsius), according to the study ? too high to allow water to remain within a few meters of the surface.

This band of relatively warm temperatures extends from the equator to about 27 degrees north and south latitude, researchers said.

"On average, it's colder at Vesta's poles than near its equator, so in that sense, they are good places to sustain water ice," Stubbs said. "But they also see sunlight for long periods of time during the summer seasons, which isn't so good for sustaining ice. So if water ice exists in those regions, it may be buried beneath a relatively deep layer of dry regolith."

Water ice might be stable at the bottom of some craters for much of the Vestan year (about 3.6 Earth years), the study found. But at some point during the summer, sunlight would probably drive it off the surface, either to be lost into space or redeposited somewhere else on the asteroid.

A spacecraft's view of Vesta

Modeling results such as those presented in the new study could soon be vetted by a robotic visitor to Vesta.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft?entered into orbit around the huge space rock in July 2011 and has been studying it ever since. Part of the probe's work involves searching for water with its gamma ray and neutron detector (GRaND) spectrometer, and Dawn recently spiraled close enough to Vesta to get a good look.

"The Dawn mission gives researchers a rare opportunity to observe Vesta for an extended period of time, the equivalent of about one season on Vesta," Stubbs said. "Hopefully, we'll know in the next few months whether the GRaND spectrometer sees evidence for water ice in Vesta's regolith."

Dawn will stay at Vesta until July, when it will depart and journey to Ceres, the largest object in the?asteroid belt. It should arrive there in February 2015.

Both Vesta and Ceres are so large that scientists consider them protoplanets ? baby planets whose growth was interrupted when Jupiter formed. Scientists hope Dawn's observations shed light on the role water has played in the evolution of planets.

"Our perceptions of Vesta have been transformed in a few months as the Dawn spacecraft has entered orbit and spiraled closer to its surface," said Lucy McFadden, a planetary scientist at NASA Goddard and a Dawn mission co-investigator. "More importantly, our new views of Vesta tell us about the early processes of solar system formation. If we can detect evidence for water beneath the surface, the next question will be is it very old or very young, and that would be exciting to ponder."

Fitch cuts Italy, Spain, other euro zone ratings (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Fitch downgraded the sovereign credit ratings of Belgium, Cyprus, Italy, Slovenia and Spain on Friday, indicating there was a 1-in-2 chance of further cuts in the next two years.

In a statement, the ratings agency said the affected countries were vulnerable in the near-term to monetary and financial shocks.

"Consequently, these sovereigns do not, in Fitch's view, accrue the full benefits of the euro's reserve currency status," it said.

Fitch cut Italy's rating to A-minus from A-plus; Spain to A from AA-minus; Belgium to AA from AA-plus; Slovenia to A from AA-minus and Cyprus to BBB-minus from BBB, leaving the small island nation just one notch above junk status.

Ireland's rating of BBB-plus was affirmed.

All of the ratings were given negative outlooks.

Fitch said it had weighed up a worsening economic outlook in much of the euro zone against the European Central Bank's December move to flood the banking sector with cheap three-year money and austerity efforts by governments to curb their debts.

"Overall, today's rating actions balance the marked deterioration in the economic outlook with both the substantive policy initiatives at the national level to address macro-financial and fiscal imbalances, and the initial success of the ECB's three-year Long-Term Refinancing Operation in easing near-term sovereign and bank funding pressures," Fitch said.

Two weeks ago, Standard & Poor's downgraded the credit ratings of nine euro zone countries, stripping France and Austria of their coveted triple-A status but not EU paymaster Germany, and pushing struggling Portugal into junk territory.

With nearly half a trillion euros of ECB liquidity coursing through the financial system, some of which has apparently gone into euro zone government bonds, and with hopes of a deal to write down a slab of Greece's mountainous debt, even that sweeping ratings action had little market impact.

The euro briefly pared gains against the dollar after Fitch cut the five euro zone sovereigns but soon jumped to a session high of $1.3208, according to Reuters data, its highest since December 13.

Italy is widely seen as the tipping point for the euro zone. If it slid towards default, the whole currency project would be threatened.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, a technocrat who has won plaudits for his economic reform drive, said he reacted to Fitch's downgrade of Italy with "detached serenity."

"They signal things that are not particularly new, for example, that Italy has a very high debt as a percentage of GDP and they signal that the way the euro zone is governed as a whole is not perfect and we knew that too," he said during a live interview on Italian television.

"They also say things that give a positive view of what is being done in Italy because there is much appreciation for policies of this government and this parliament," he said.

Fitch said of Italy: "A more severe rating action was forestalled by the strong commitment of the Italian government to reducing the budget deficit and to implementing structural reform as well as the significant easing of near-term financing risks as a result of the ECB's 3-year Longer-term Refinancing Operation."

Dana White calls out Internet hackers, they respond by releasing his alleged personal info

CHICAGO -- The war is on between the UFC and Internet hackers.

On Sunday, UFC.com was re-routed several times to the website UGnazi. The site's organizers, who White called terrorists several times during the "UFC on Fox 2" press conference, said the hacking of UFC.com is a result of the company's support of SOPA and PIPA. The wide-ranging bills are aimed at stopping online piracy.

White lashed out at the hackers.

Update: White dug in deeper during a conversation with The Score's Mauro Ranallo (13:30 mark).

"Keep hacking our site, do it again. Do it tonight," said White. "These guys look like terrorists now and a bill that was about to die, is about to come back."

The hacker taking credit for the UFC hit, @joshthgod, went a different route after the challenge, posting White's personal info, including a Social Security number, a list of residential addresses, a vehicle identification number and a personal phone number.

That followed a tweet that said White is now the target.

"@danawhite We don't want your site anymore. We are going after YOU! Follow me for tonights exciting events! #ufc #sopa #acta #pipa,"

[Related: Why SOPA, PIPA aren't answer to MMA's piracy problem]

White said the hackers are only hurting their own cause by alerting politicians that there's a serious issue. He's willing to risk his own safety to stop the online pilfering.

"Is SOPA the perfect bill? No, it's not. The only thing that we're focused on is piracy. Piracy is stealing. If you walk into a store and you steal a gold watch, it's the same as stealing a pay-per-view. I don't care what your twisted, demented idea of stealing is," White said. "These kids who grew up on the Internet never had to pay for anything, so they don't think that you should have to."

White closed by saying he's not afraid of the Internet, it's where cowards live.

California is poised to vote on new rules that would require automakers to build cars and trucks by 2025 that emit about three-quarters less smog producing pollutants and also mandate that one of every seven new cars sold in the state be a zero emission or plug-in hybrid vehicle. The California Air Resources Board will begin hearing testimony Thursday, Jan. 26. 2012 in Los Angeles on its ?Advanced Clean Car? program, and is expected to continue on Friday. (AP) ? Automakers expressed qualified support for California's proposed rules to require carmakers to build more electric and other less-polluting hybrid cars and trucks by 2025.

Companies including Ford Motor Corp., Chrysler Group LLC, General Motors Co., Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and others submitted testimony Thursday in support of new emissions standards during a meeting of California Air Resources Board.

The board is scheduled to resume hearing testimony on the regulations ? which would require that vehicles emit about 75 percent less smog-producing pollutants ? on Friday morning in Los Angeles.

The new standards also include big cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, and would begin with new cars sold in 2015, and get increasingly more stringent until 2025. The rules also mandate that one of every seven new cars sold in 2025 in the state be a zero-emission or plug-in hybrid vehicle.

California Air Resources Board Chairman Mary Nichols said she hopes the rules lead "the nation and the world."

"We can't afford to wait. We have to act on these issues now," she said at the panel's meeting. "Our projections show continued growth in population and vehicle miles traveled, which will affect air quality for years to come."

The overall goal of the state is to have 1.4 million zero-emission and plug-in hybrids on California roads by 2025. But the program also looks ahead to 2050, laying groundwork for a goal of having 87 percent of the state's fleet of new vehicles fueled by electricity, hydrogen fuel cells or other clean technologies.

Yet the rules provide some flexibility for automakers by giving them the ability to claim credits toward the zero-emission mandates if the company's other models exceed the federal greenhouse gas emissions mandates. These credits could be applied toward those zero-emission vehicle mandates in 2018 through 2021.

However, this aspect of the plan was not supported by many of the U.S. car makers like Ford, Chrysler and GM, who said it could result in hundreds of thousands of mandated electric and other clean vehicles being taken off the road in that time period, hurting the emerging market.

"This greenhouse gas over-compliance provision runs counter to the goals of the zero-emission vehicle mandates," said Robert Babick, speaking on behalf of GM. "We don't see how this provision makes the program better."

Industry groups representing auto dealers worried that the new regulations will increase the costs of vehicles for consumers and stifle the industry's growth.

Other states often adopt California's smog emissions standards because they are stricter than federal ones.

Fourteen states, including Washington, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts, have adopted the state's current emissions goals, which is why the new regulations could have a wide-ranging effect. Of those states, 10 also adopted the zero-emission vehicle standards.

But the California New Car Dealers Association and other industry groups representing those who sell cars said the board is overestimating consumer demand for electric vehicles and other so-called "zero-emission vehicles."

Some dealer groups have estimated that $3,200 would be added to the average cost of a car because of the required technological changes, and that consumers have been slow to adopt them.

Jonathan Morrison, of the state dealers' association, said car retailers are supportive of new technologies that are accepted by their customers, but said the acceptance of electric and other vehicles has been slow.

"Consumers do not make purchasing decisions based upon regulatory mandates," he said.

The board's research staff disputes those estimates and says increases in hybrid and other sales continue to rise as more cars hit the market. They argue that fuel cost savings will make up for any vehicle price increase.

"Our research shows a $1,400 to $1,900 car price increase. But over the life of the vehicles, the owners save $6,000 in reduced fuel and maintenance costs," board spokesman David Clegern said.

One of the nation's foremost consumer groups, the Consumers' Union, the policy and advocacy division of Consumer Reports, supports the regulations.

The rules will "protect consumers by encouraging the development of cleaner, more efficient cars that save families money, help reduce the American economy's vulnerability to oil price shocks and reduce harmful air pollution," according to a letter from the group.

Who needs a college degree when fame and fortune awaits?

Since their first appearance on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" in 2007, Kendall and Kylie Jenner have become stars in their own right, thanks to lucrative modeling campaigns and a thriving teen fashion empire.

PHOTOS: Kardashians as kids

When Us Weekly spoke to their father Bruce Jenner at the Performance 3D demonstration in NYC Monday, the 62-year-old Olympian admitted his girls' careers are so busy they may not pursue higher education.

"If they want to go to college, certainly, I think it's a good idea. But I'm not the advocate of, 'You've got to go to college!'" Bruce said. "I think by the time they graduate from high school, they will probably be in a position to go right to working."

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Bruce defends Kendall's racy bikini photo shoot

Like their older sisters Kourtney, 32, Kim, 31, and Khloe, 27, Kendall and Kylie are becoming branded businesswomen, Bruce explained. "They've just developing their clothing line for Sears -- it's a little more teen-oriented, the clothing line. And they're working all the time on the show."

With two magazine covers under her belt (American Cheerleader and Teen Prom), Kendall, 16, is poised to become the next big supermodel, Bruce added.

VIDEO: Bruce freaks out when he finds out Kendall is on birth control

"She'll probably have a career by the time she's out of high school," Bruce told Us. "If that's what she wants to do, that's good. I don't know if college is going to be that important for her."

British-based all-star concert to debut in NYC (omg!)

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Secret Policeman's Ball is letting America in on the party: The British-based music and comedy festival is coming to New York in March.

Coldplay, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Mumford & Sons and Russell Brand are among the acts who have signed on for the event at Radio City Music Hall on March 4. The concert will benefit Amnesty International, as it has since it started back in 1976 with celebrities like John Cleese. Over the years, Bono, Sting and others have participated.

This will mark the first time it's being held in New York City.

"For us, it's iconic and a very special thing, and has provided the opportunity to really celebrate the presence of freedom of expression and free speech, and how we can move people and how we can bring people together, and just how powerful that is," said Amnesty International spokesman Andy Hackman in an interview Tuesday.

The last Secret Policeman's Ball was in 2008 in London. Hackman said the organization wanted to do something different and on a grander scale this year since it's the 50th anniversary of the human rights group.

"That phrase 'human rights' has lost meaning in some ways," he said. "That's why we want to demonstrate the power and the joy that free speech can bring to us all. ... It's really just using these amazing talented people to demonstrate the power, what a force of good free speech is."

David "DJ" Javerbaum, the former head writer and executive producer for "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," said the show will feature sketches, music and more. He said the legacy of the Secret Policeman's Ball, which has lived on in videos, has helped it attract top talent, some of which are still to be announced.

"These are very seminal movies for anybody young in that age who wanted to get into comedy," he said.

Tickets go on sale on Monday.

DuPont sees slight 4Q dip, record annual earnings (AP)

DOVER, Del. ? Chemical and plastics maker The DuPont Co. said Tuesday that increases in raw material costs and taxes and a drop in volumes outpaced a 14 percent increase in prices in the fourth quarter and its net income fell.

The company's adjusted earnings topped analysts' expectations, however, and its shares rose 5 cents to $49.40 in afternoon trading.

DuPont reported net quarterly income of $373 million, or 40 cents per share, compared with $376 million, or 40 cents per share, in 2010's fourth quarter. Its revenue rose 14 percent to $8.4 billion. Analysts were expecting revenue of $8.52 billion.

Excluding one-time items, DuPont said it earned 35 cents per share, down from 50 cents per share a year earlier. Analysts on average forecast 33 cents per share, according to FactSet.

Chairwoman and CEO Ellen Kullman said the quarter's volume declines don't reflect macroeconomic conditions. Instead, customers are conserving cash and destocking, she said.

"After a challenging fourth quarter, we anticipate conditions will improve in many of our industrial businesses as (this) year plays out," Kullman said.

For the full year, DuPont earned about $3.5 billion, or $3.68 per share, compared with $3.05 billion, or $3.28 per share, for 2010. Excluding one-time times, per-share earnings rose 20 percent to a record $3.93, while revenue rose 20 percent to $38 billion, slightly below the average analyst estimate for $38.1 billion.

The per-share earnings figure was near the high end of the lowered 2011 earnings forecast DuPont issued last month to reflect weaker demand in electronics and industrial supplies.

Price increases across its business segments plus acquisitions in health and nutrition and industrial biosciences boosted full-year earnings, the company said.

"We delivered exceptional full-year results in 2011 despite significant market headwinds late in the year," Kullman said. "... We remain well-positioned to serve customers and innovate as key markets rebound and global population growth drives new opportunities."

DuPont reaffirmed its prediction for a 12 percent increase in earnings in 2012, to $4.20 to $4.40 per share.

For the fourth quarter, DuPont's volumes fell around the world, led by a 23 percent drop in the Asia-Pacific region. The company said customer destocking in solar panel, polymer and industrial supply chains was a key factor.

Weaker demand for DuPont products used in consumer electronics and construction also dampened the company's fourth-quarter volumes. Its revenue in electronics and communications fell 18 percent as volumes in the unit fell 33 percent.

DuPont's agriculture unit reported the only quarterly volume increase, of 3 percent; revenue in the unit rose 8 percent, with the company attributing the performance to strong sales in Latin America.

DuPont also benefited from last year's acquisition of Danish company Danisco's specialty food ingredients business. Revenue in the nutrition and health unit more than doubled, with sales rising $468 million to $806 million.

Volume in performance chemicals, including titanium dioxide, which is used to whiten products from paint to toothpaste, fell 17 percent. But price increases compensated for the declines and boosted the unit's revenue by 12 percent to $1.9 billion.

Jeff Windau, an analyst with Edward Jones, said he was impressed.

Kullman said the titanium oxide business was "good" even at its depths and "fantastic" at its peaks, and DuPont expects that market to remain strong.

"Customers who historically only purchase on a quarterly basis are now looking for long-term relationships," she noted. "... I think that's an indicator that supply is becoming a predominant issue."

DuPont's agriculture unit led results for the year, with revenue rising 17 percent to $9.2 billion on 10 percent higher volume.

The safety and protection unit posted the second-highest volume gain for the year at 4 percent.

4 reasons to view Egypt's Islamists without fear (The Week)

New York ? Religious parties overwhelmingly dominate the country's new parliament ? but the West shouldn't panic quite yet

Egypt's new parliament?convened Monday after the country's first elections since Arab Spring protests ousted longtime leader Hosni Mubarak last February. Election authorities announced over the weekend that Islamist parties had won nearly three-quarters of parliament's seats. Secular liberals worry that religious lawmakers will use their dominance to curtail freedoms when legislators write a new constitution. Is the new Egypt really something to be feared? Here, four reasons the Islamists might not be as dangerous as their rivals think:

1. The religious parties themselves are divided
Egypt's Islamists hardly speak with one voice, says the Eurasia Group at?Foreign Policy. In the new parliament, the Muslim Brotherhood has 47 percent of the seats in the lower house, while the ultra-conservative Al-Nour Party has 25 percent. The two groups have "different, often competing, visions of Egypt's future," so they're unlikely to collaborate. The Brotherhood says it will prioritize fixing the economy, and won't impose religious rules. The Nour party, on the other hand, is "fundamentalist and more radical." I have to admit, says Andrew Stuttaford at National Review: The in-fighting does offer a "glimmer of hope, however faint."

SEE MORE: Egypt's vote: A mandate for Islamists?

?

2. The military is still in charge
"The military, which took over when Mubarak was ousted, holds ultimate power for at least six more months," says the Associated Press. And as the promised transition to democracy continues, "the Brotherhood and ruling generals are expected to jostle and cajole each other over dividing power ? with the Brotherhood "wary of moves that could cause a clash." Plus, the consensus among experts in Egyptian politics is that "the army will not fully abandon politics," says Marwa Awad at Reuters. Indeed, while Islamists may control Egypt's parliament, says Lisa Goldman at +972, for now, at least, it's a "rubber-stamp" body. The real power is held by the military.

3. Liberal parties will (slowly) gain influence
The coalition of liberal groups that spearheaded the protests went into the election campaign with "no financial support from foreign governments, no long-established parties, and no candidates with face recognition," says Goldman. "They had five months to prepare for elections ? to form parties from scratch, choose candidates, articulate a platform, and then go out and campaign, while the chaos of the revolution continued." Despite these Herculean challenges, they won 30 percent of the vote. Given the headstart the Brotherhood and other Islamists had, I bet liberals can gain ground as the "messy, protracted" revolution continues.

4. Egypt's Islamists won't seek trouble abroad
The rest of the world, especially neighboring Israel, has plenty of reason to be wary, says Goldman. But they don't need to worry about war. The Islamists "have neither the power nor the will to express their dislike by mobilizing for war." They'll have their hands full with what could be years of upheaval and violence at home, as the country's revolution presses ahead.

Compounds in mate tea induce death in colon cancer cells, in vitro study shows

ScienceDaily (Jan. 23, 2012) ? Could preventing colon cancer be as simple as developing a taste for yerba mate tea? In a recent University of Illinois study, scientists showed that human colon cancer cells die when they are exposed to the approximate number of bioactive compounds present in one cup of this brew, which has long been consumed in South America for its medicinal properties.

"The caffeine derivatives in mate tea not only induced death in human colon cancer cells, they also reduced important markers of inflammation," said Elvira de Mejia, a U of I associate professor of food chemistry and food toxicology.

That's important because inflammation can trigger the steps of cancer progression, she said.

In the in vitro study, de Mejia and former graduate student Sirima Puangpraphant isolated, purified, and then treated human colon cancer cells with caffeoylquinic acid (CQA) derivatives from mate tea. As the scientists increased the CQA concentration, cancer cells died as a result of apoptosis.

"Put simply, the cancer cell self-destructs because its DNA has been damaged," she said.

The ability to induce apoptosis, or cell death, is a promising tactic for therapeutic interventions in all types of cancer, she said.

de Mejia said they were able to identify the mechanism that led to cell death. Certain CQA derivatives dramatically decreased several markers of inflammation, including NF-kappa-B, which regulates many genes that affect the process through the production of important enzymes. Ultimately cancer cells died with the induction of two specific enzymes, caspase-3 and caspase-8, de Mejia said.

"If we can reduce the activity of NF-kappa-B, the important marker that links inflammation and cancer, we'll be better able to control the transformation of normal cells to cancer cells," she added.

The results of the study strongly suggest that the caffeine derivatives in mate tea have potential as anti-cancer agents and could also be helpful in other diseases associated with inflammation, she said.

But, because the colon and its microflora play a major role in the absorption and metabolism of caffeine-related compounds, the anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects of mate tea may be most useful in the colon.

"We believe there's ample evidence to support drinking mate tea for its bioactive benefits, especially if you have reason to be concerned about colon cancer. Mate tea bags are available in health food stores and are increasingly available in large supermarkets," she added.

The scientists have already completed and will soon publish the results of a study that compares the development of colon cancer in rats that drank mate tea as their only source of water with a control group that drank only water.

This in vitro study was published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, vol. 55, pp. 1509-1522, in 2011. Co-authors include Sirima Puangpraphant, now an assistant professor at Kasetsart University in Thailand; Greg Potts, an undergraduate student of the U of I; and Mark A. Berhow and Karl Vermillion of the USDA, ARS, National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research in Peoria, Illinois. The work was funded by the U of I Research Board and Puangpraphant's Royal Thai Government Scholarship.

High court: warrant needed for GPS tracking (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Supreme Court says police must get a search warrant before using GPS technology to track criminal suspects.

The court ruled in the case of Washington, D.C., nightclub owner Antoine Jones. A federal appeals court in Washington overturned his drug conspiracy conviction because police did not have a warrant when they installed a GPS device on his vehicle and then tracked his movements for a month.

The GPS device helped authorities link Jones to a suburban house used to stash money and drugs. He was sentenced to life in prison before the appeals court overturned the conviction. The Supreme Court agreed with the appeals court.

The case is U.S. v. Jones, 10-1259.

Dealing With An Automotive Broker | EzinePR.com - Submit Articles ...

Negotiating, haggling, horse buying and selling, no matter what you prefer calling it, is essential when it comes to shopping for a car. In the event you don?t partake, for any explanation why, you then?ll pay more for the car than you had to. And don?t omit, you?ll be paying pastime right through the life of your mortgage on an amount that will have been lower.

Negotiating the price of a car puts a large number of folks into their uncomfortable zone. However, it in reality will have to now not; especially today with all the data to be had to the consumer. The important thing to trust and a better level of convenience comes within the type of knowledge and research.

Let?s get a little bit of a bounce get started in your research with a few key issues to bear in mind you probably have determined that it?s about time to switch your ride.

Seeing that there?s such a lot data available to you, don?t try to commit your analysis to reminiscence; even though you?re simplest making an allowance for a couple of choices of vehicles. Take some time to prepare your notes right into an automotive buying chances folder. Just remember to take your folder with you to the automobile dealer. Don?t be embarrassed or self conscious about doing this; it is a trade transaction and you will have to treat it as such.

As a rule of thumb, automotive dealers have a benefit margin of approximately 10 to twenty percent. The 20% is theirs if you happen to pay the sticker worth and it?s 10% for the car dealer in case you get closer to the broker bill price. Remember if you want a selected automotive with explicit options that you?ll be able to?t in finding on a broker?s lot and also you order the auto; you?ll get exactly what you want, but your ability to negotiate the promoting worth will be greatly diminished.

Don?t let emotions or automotive buying groceries fatigue get the most productive of you. In the event you in finding the exact automotive that you wish to have and are ready to become a purchaser, keep you thinking and your feelings just about the vest. When you are getting drained and mentally beaten right down to the place you ?simply wish to get this over with? take a holiday or come back another time. Keep in mind that, emotionally buying a car or shopping for whilst tired and fatigued will probably cost you money. It?s essential to understand that you might have the ultimate trump card. You?ll be able to always stroll out of the dealership at any time. With out you there is not any deal and automotive sellers indisputably recognise this.

The early a part of the automobile shopping for procedure is getting competitive prices. This might not be as simple for you as it sounds on the surface. Promoting automobiles is a particularly competitive industry for car dealers. They don?t like to provide out their ?very best price? over the phone or with just a brief seek advice from to their lot. They recognize that no matter what value they quote you, if you?re taking that worth a couple of blocks down the street to the following dealer; after all they?ll beat that price (if even by way of only some dollars) just to get your business. So, you?ll be able to?t blame them for being a bit protective of what their exact base line figure to you may be.

But needless to say, you keep watch over the negotiations. Sooner or later during the automobile shopping for procedure, if you?re fascinated by getting your perfect deal, you will have to take a seat down and inform the salesperson instantly out that you?re a buyer and if they are going to paintings with you to put the deal together then a deal might rather well come together. Be very eager about this. Get the automobile salesclerk and the broker desirous about promoting you car not you getting fascinated with buying an automotive from them.

As soon as the negotiating sleeves are rolled up, you?ll need to negotiate from the broker bill value up. Never, by no means, negotiate from the sticker value down. And never, by no means, by no means (understand the 3 nevers!) negotiate, buy, or another way talk about or screen what you?d like your per 30 days bills to be. DON?T even speak about a per thirty days cost vary! You?ve done your research. You realize the numbers. You realize that for those who get this automobile for that worth; you?ll be in budget. Don?t speak about this with ANYONE!

And in spite of everything as you move closer to last the car negotiating, don?t pay for stuff you don?t need. Everyone at a car dealership is tasked with promoting and making benefit for the dealer. You will, after all, need to pay for taxes, registration charges, and destination charges. However don?t pay for additional delivery charges, managing, advertising and marketing, promotional, ground charges, administrative charges, or another dealer verbiage for things they are making an attempt so as to add on to the deal. And you should definitely say ?thanks, however not thank you? to extras like pin stripping, rust proofing, fabric protection, paint sealant, or any factor else. Those are just 99.forty four percent natural profit for the dealer. And also you positive don?t want them to your monetary agreement the place you?ll even be paying passion on them.

Three-Year-Old Missouri Boy Battles Cancer | fox4kc.com ? Kansas ...

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ? A three-year-old Missouri boy is using his painting skills in an effort to save his life. His family plans to sell some of the toddler?s paintings to help pay for his cancer treatment.

Liam Myrick is like most three-year-olds. He likes cars, trucks and painting pictures.

?I want to eat at my house,? Myrick said.

For now, he spends his days and nights at Children?s Hospital in St. Louis. Last July, His mom Shawna took him to the doctor after he became sick.

?They ordered a CT and our lives changed,? said Shawna Myrick.

He was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma. Doctors had found a tumor on top of his kidney. The toddler underwent excruciating chemotherapy. Just recently, he had a bone marrow stem cell transplant on the January 10, which is why the brave little boy has to remain in the hospital.

To help defray the costs of his medical expenses, the Myricks are auctioning Liam?s work on Facebook. To learn more click here.
