This is one of the few unrestricted views of the tower, seen from the Habitat Store customer loading bay, adjacent to Churchill Square. Work fast. You will be asked to move on by security within 5 milliseconds.

The main body of the church was built by Rev. Henry Michell Wagner 1846-48 for his son. His son ? Rev. Arthur Douglas Wagner ? inherited his fathers wealth in 1870, and built the bell tower and spire between 1873-75. The tower is offset, and not symmetrical with the church.

The church is a example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. The architect was Richard Cromwell Carpenter. The bulk of the walls and square tower are build from flint with Caen limestone defining corners and windows.

In 1996 the wooden octagon surmounting the Tower was renovated and restored, and the gargoyles / beasts / dragons were replaced with new carvings. Two extremely weathered examples of the original beasts can be found in the huge fireplace of the "Fisherman?s Vestry".

The gothic spire is constructed from wood, although the silvering on the wood of as a consequnce of weathering ? and the grey lead flashing ? gives it a stone appearance at first glance.

A wooden structure was used because of anxieties relating to the use of stone for a tall structure. This was caused by the (then) recent collapse in of the spire of nearby Chichester Cathedral. The Cathedral collapse happened 450 years after the spire?s construction, and is believed to have been caused by subsidence.

The decoration inside is very ornate. It includes stained glass windows designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin.

An excellent series of panoramas including this church ? which also has internal and external interactive panoramas driven by Quicktime and Flash can be found at Brighton?s Architecture.
